A Quick Trip: Florida | The Fresh Exchange

This last weekend we took a quick trip south to Florida to spend the weekend with my family. We gathered together (all 50 of us) to celebrate my grandparents. This year they are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary and 80th birthdays and we all felt as if this was a moment to gather together and celebrate.

It was extremely special to spend time celebrating my grandparents’ lives and marriage. It was just as great to have time with the rest of my family as well. There is nothing like a warm weekend getaway with friendly faces to warm the soul from head to toe.

The weekend had it’s share of ups and downs as well as surprises. We began the weekend with Mike sick and not sure if he would even be able to come with me. I made sure we poured ourselves into the car Friday morning and that we got there in time to watch the sunset on the lake with family. The next day we spent time at the pool, Mike fell in a lake while golfing, and I made sure to get the most out of my time at the pool.

Sunday we headed out with my cousin and his girlfriend to explore and have lunch at a local beach. We wanted to take in some of the true Florida Saturday culture in the area. I also was on the hunt to soak in the scent of the orange blossoms as much as I possibly could. That scent is absolutely intoxicating.

That evening, we celebrated with my family. I watched my grandparents dance together to their favorite songs and was reminded what it looks like to love someone for 60 years. I took in the variances in my family and how interesting it is to bring us all together in one room. We danced, laughed, and drank in celebration and ultimately I saw a little more of where I came from and who I am that evening. It was one of the special moments in life we sometimes forget to cherish, embrace, let loose, and live into. That night I did my best to do just that.

Though the trip was short, it felt good. We saw new sides of the south as we drove I-95 through Charleston and Savannah. I left wishing there was more spanish moss in Raleigh and I felt a little closer to my roots. Life is a wild ride. Weekends like this one are a wonderful reminder to ride the wave while letting it all in at the same time.

Excited to be home for the first weekend this month, but wishing for the Florida sun and palms…do you blame me?
