Yesterday was an adventure. Our friends from Grand Rapids, Bryan and Mae (you know the awesome photographers I always talk about…yeah they took that pic to the right of me —> ) were up for the weekend shooting a wedding and we wanted to take advantage of the amazing weather we have been having. So we decided to venture through the Sleeping Bear Dunes and hike to Lake Michigan on our day off.
If you know nothing of what I am talking about, that is completely okay, head over and check out the site on the dunes. It honestly is one of the coolest places I have been and I have traveled a fair amount. It stands up to my love for Joshua Tree in California. Every time I go to the dunes I am amazed by the place I live and how there are such astounding things on Earth. This place should really be on your bucket list but I know I am biased.
Now I have never done the 3 mile hike over the dunes before. I have been to other place along the lakeshore but this was my first time conquering these dunes. I had no idea what I signed myself up for and if it had been warmer I am pretty sure we may have died without more water. It took us about 3 hours to hike through the sand to get to the water and back. We all began barefooted but I wimped out and placed my Chacos back on. My feet started getting heat blisters and were getting pretty raw. I think I need to work on my summer feet huh? You can all make fun of me…I know I am a wimp.
Anyways this was one of those days where you feel you accomplished something and pulling myself out of bed this morning was similar to when I played soccer in college after that first day of pre-season. If someone said let’s do it again, though, I would say yes. I love the feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day. I am not someone who likes to relax too often. I am a pretty big go getter in life and hate going to bed without knowing how I have accomplished something pretty big. For real I will honestly be disappointed with myself.
So I wanted to share our little adventure with you guys. These were all shot from my iphone 4 and processed with Cross Process. Bryan and Mae shot some of their own so I may show their post later this week.
Hope this inspires you to get out and do something adventurist this week! There is so much to see in this world so get out from behind your computer 🙂

Hello! I’m Megan Gilger,

A strong believer that nature and the seasons are our greatest teachers. We live on a hill in Leelanau County, Michigan just a stone’s throw from Lake Michigan. This land we are responsible for is where we are focused on building a life around the seasons and intention. We spend our days here building a regenerative model of living and focusing our garden on native plants and intensive polyculture planting styles. My focus is less on self-sufficiency and more on community-sufficiency through how we grow and connect through the seasons.
