I hope everyone had a wonderful Independence Day weekend. As I assume everyone probably already knew Saturday was March 2nd, Texas Independence Day. For the Gilger’s that typically means playing Willie Nelson records, toasting shots of tequila, eating BBQ in 70 degree weather and going to the rodeo with my family. But with all the travel, projects and lack of free air miles we decided to stay up north this year and go on some local adventures. So we meet up with our uber talented photographer friend Bryan and went on an adventure we have been wanting to do for a couple months.

I don’t know how many times we have come to the Port Oneida beach in Leelanau County, at the foot of the Pyramid Point trail, in the summer time but we have never come here in the winter time. I’m not going to tell you it was as fun as it is in the summer, but  we did have it all to ourselves, which is a rarity any other time we go. But we all braved the cold in order to take some time to slow down, enjoy the view and talk about life.

For 23 years of my life I lived in Texas where the seasons were hot and less hot, those were our indications of seasonal change. So when I moved to Michigan four years ago I became hyper aware of the changes in every season, especially winter. I hate the cold. Until this, my fourth winter, I finally started to notice and value the beautiful moments and landscape this time of year offers here. I really wanted to go to the water before we headed south to Raleigh next week, as who knows what things will be like when we return. Have you ever spent time at an icy beach? Frozen sand is really an amazing thing to see.

Adventures like this one make cold days seem much more fun and amazing. As a southerner transplanted in the north it is not always easy to enjoy this time of year, but days like this one make me realize how lucky I am to live somewhere with seasons like this.

We have been working like crazy lately, so expect to see our new work and our new website in the coming weeks. We are also planning for our two week trip to Raleigh starting on the 12th. So please tweet or comment any recommendations. We want to hear! We hope to have some posts about Raleigh as well for those of you who have never been.
