How to make Bulletproof Coffee

How to Make Bulletproof Coffee | The Fresh Exchange

If you have heard of bulletproof coffee, upgraded coffee, butter coffee, etc… you know there are many ways to make a cup but the base is always quality coffee, grassfed butter, and liquid MCT coconut oil. If you haven’t ever heard of bulletproof coffee you might be wondering why in the world anyone would make up such a dumb name for a cup of coffee and then why anyone would add butter and coconut oil in a perfectly good cup of coffee. I agree, the name is dumb but I didn’t make it up. However, the coffee is amazing, both in taste and for mental/physical reasons.

In April of this year, in Arizona, we had our first cup of bulletproof coffee at a juice bar in Scottsdale. At the time, we didn’t know why anyone would add butter to a cup of coffee, but we knew all of the health and fitness people in SF were freaking out about it. So we closed our eyes and took our first sip. To my surprise, it wasn’t disgusting. In fact, it tasted like a perfect vanilla latte.

Again if you’ve never tried a bulletproof coffee, I completely understand if you are still thinking to yourself, that’s great that it tastes good but why are you drinking it… The science is a bit beyond what I could get into in this post, but the overall idea is that it helps with mental clarity, speeding up your metabolism, and an extreme energy boost. There are a ton of articles surrounding all of the benefits, so I won’t even get into any of that. I will say, for myself and pre-pregnancy Megan, we have been blending up a cup of bulletproof coffee for breakfast almost every morning since having it in Scottsdale and have never had the levels of energy and focus we have with a cup of bulletproof. There is also a rumor that it boosts your fertility. I’m not sure if that’s true, but I know it didn’t hurt ;).

In the past five months, I have been experimenting with a ton of different combinations of butter, coffee, and MCT oils (liquid coconut oil) to arrive at the perfect combination. My recipe below is my personal combination I now make every morning and it works great for me. Feel free to use this recipe as your base, but be warned, add no more than a tablespoon of MCT oil. Trust me.

Add all of these ingredients into a blender and blend for 5-10 seconds.

Again, make sure you add all of the ingredients into a blender and blend for 5-10 seconds, otherwise it will be a lumpy oily coffee disaster. Well, there is our bulletproof coffee recipe! 4. This is one of the most amazing cup of coffee that I’ve ever tried!!! I`ve never think that one so simple and strange combination can be so brilliant 🙂 Thank you very very very much 🙂

  5. Mike — you’re right about the fats in grass-fed butter for sure. It’s a shame it’s so hard to get grass-fed most places because it makes any animal product that comes from it sooo much better. It’s not even possible to buy in Canada, where I am :-/ I only liken it to sugar in that someone in ketosis is using fat as energy the way that normal folks use glucose, so the energy boost is comparable to having a bowl of lucky charms with your coffee (minus the sugar crash and… the general terribleness of HFCS haha). Ketosis makes butter, oil, and lard a quick energy food like fruit and pasta is normally.

I personally find bulletproof coffee delicious and a long-term improvement in fat quality will probably benefit your energy, but you need to be in full-blown ketosis when you wake up in the morning for bulletproof coffee to work as anything more than coffee. I personally stopped eating a ketogenic diet because it was too punishing to accidentally exit ketosis but I still drink bulletproof coffee 🙂

Take this with a grain of salt though, everyone on the internet thinks they’re a nutritionist after a couple hours of reading, myself included! 😛

  6. I’d like to know how you keep it hot? Or is this supposed to be consumed luke warm? Plan on trying it but want to set expectations.
